LAWRENCE — One of Kansas Public Radio’s two frequencies in Manhattan will be moving slightly down the dial.

KPR2, KPR’s news/talk channel, will be moving from 98.3 FM to 97.9 FM in late March. KPR2 broadcasts news shows such as “Morning Edition,” “All Things Considered,” “Talk of the Nation” and “Marketplace,” world news from the BBC and comedy and variety shows on the weekend. KPR’s main programming channel of NPR news, classical music and jazz can be heard in Manhattan on 99.5 FM. That frequency will not change.

“We’re shooting for late March to launch the new frequency,” said Janet Campbell, KPR general manager. “It will depend on the weather, equipment delivery and tower crew availability. We’ll be off the air for a day when making the switch. After that, you’ll be able to hear KPR2 on 97.9 FM with no interruptions.”

About a year after KPR launched its two Manhattan frequencies in spring 2009, Salina Media Group contacted KPR about moving the 98.3 FM signal. Even though KPR’s signal conformed to all FCC license requirements, there was some unintended signal bleed onto one of SMG’s longtime frequencies serving Manhattan. KPR and SMG then negotiated an agreement to move the frequency.

KPR, licensed to the University of Kansas, broadcasts on 91.5 FM in Lawrence, 89.7 FM in Emporia, 91.3 FM in Olsburg-Junction City, 89.9 FM in Atchison, 90.3 FM in Chanute and 99.5 FM and 97.9 FM in Manhattan. KPR can be heard on the Internet at kpr.ku.edu. KPR also operates KPR2, a news-talk channel on HD Radio. Those broadcasts can be heard on a high-definition receiver or on KPR’s website.
