University Honors Program to bestow 175 medallions to graduating students May 21

LAWRENCE — The University Honors Program at the University of Kansas will present graduation medallions to 175 members of the Class of 2011.
The recognition ceremony will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at the Crafton-Preyer Theatre in Murphy Hall.
Gary McClelland, professor of psychology at the University of Colorado-Boulder and University Honors Program alumnus, will deliver the keynote address.
Graduating senior Ariel Tazkargy, of Wellington, will speak on behalf of the graduating class.
Kathleen McCluskey-Fawcett, honors program director and professor of psychology, will welcome the students and their guests.
The full regalia event recognizes members of the Class of 2011 who have completed the University Honors Program. The medallions are worn with graduation regalia.
The ceremony includes honors program members who graduated in summer and fall 2010 and those who will be graduating this spring. The university’s formal Commencement takes place at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 22, in Memorial Stadium.
An honors student’s education takes place both within and outside the classroom. Honors classes are designed to engage the student's intellectual curiosity, the honors tutorial to acquaint the student with research and research resources, and out-of-classroom experiences to add breadth to the overall undergraduate experience in honors at KU. The program graduates students who have gained a deeper and more complex view of the world they are entering.
