LAWRENCE — Eric Umble, a sophomore studying clarinet performance at the University of Kansas, placed second at the 31st annual Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition.

Held April 30 at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, the competition attracted about 60 musicians competing in several categories. Twelve finalists were selected from initial auditions and were asked to perform a movement of a concerto from memory in public. Umble placed second with his performance of Mozart’s clarinet concerto. Umble will receive a cash prize and the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra in February.

Umble, a sophomore studying clarinet performance with professor Stephanie Zelnick, began his musical studies at the Lancaster Conservatory of Music. He has appeared with a variety of ensembles, including the Franklin and Marshall College Philharmonia, the Rocky Ridge Music Center Festival Orchestra, the International Youth Wind Orchestra and the Heritage Philharmonic Orchestra. He has served as principal clarinet in both the KU Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. Umble also performs with the KU Helianthus Ensemble. He received first place in the Arapahoe Philharmonic Concerto Competition, won the KU Concerto Competition and received grand prize at this year’s 71st annual Naftzger Young Artists competition. Umble recently traveled to Holland, funded in part through the KU School of Music Student Opportunity Fund, to perform and raise money for Dutch refugees.

Umble is the son of Ron and Diane Umble of Lancaster, Pa. He is a graduate of Lancaster Mennonite School.
